In 1925, the Canadian government appointed a committee of six public servants to consider the question of the most suitable design for a flag to be used on land.  So much controversy erupted over the possibility of replacing the Union Jack, still the official flag, that Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King decided to cancel the order-in-council establishing the committee.
